Rae and shan kidsWe are just two American girls who met in Kindergarten, dreamed of traveling abroad, studied in England, and are now celebrating our 20+ year friendship by blogging about what we love: finding U.K. influences in our American towns. While we may be separated by 1,300 miles, we now spend much of our friendship on FaceTime plotting how we will get back .

Shan by bridgeShan: I was born a traveler. Growing up in Michigan, I was an avid reader, exploring the world outside our lakeside town through the pages of a book. I quickly fell in love with the rich history and romance of Europe, and was determined to go abroad as soon as I could. Many, many scholarship applications later and I was off on a semester abroad in Oxford, England, where I studied Medieval and Renaissance literature and history. I couldn’t get enough and upon my return to the states, I was already applying for a semester in France. Today, I live in Colorado with my love (who spent his semester abroad in Ireland).

My current U.K.-inspired passions include BBC shows, searching for imported British sharp cheddar that I can actually afford, and making my way through the year’s bestsellers written by British authors.

Rae PlatformRae: Growing up in a city that strongly valued heritage, I’ve always had an avid interest in all things related to culture and history. My parents encouraged traveling, and I took my first trip overseas when I was only 8 years old to Glasgow, Scotland, where my mom was attending a Rotary International Conference. It was there that I fell in love with travel, and knew that I would one day live overseas. 12 years later, I landed in Vienna, Austria for a summer study abroad experience.Three months after I returned, I boarded another plane headed over the Atlantic and settled this time in York, England for a semester at York St. John University. I fell head over heels in love with York, spending my days learning about Shakespeare, sipping tea, and wandering through the maze of cobblestone streets. Though I’m a restless traveler at heart, Michigan is where I call home.

Like Shan, I have a number of U.K.-inspired passions including binge-watching every British show I can find on Hulu, attempting to bake the perfect scone, rereading the Harry Potter series, and trying to convince my favorite U.K. comedians to tour in the U.S.
